Ground preparation works in Amiantos Mine

IMG 1158In the frame of implementation of the project "Biodiversity Conservation in Restoration and Management of the Amiantos Asbestos Mine", funded by EEA Grants 2009 – 2014, the Department of Forests is working intensively this time of the year, on reshaping the wastes to be restored in autumn 2013 and placing topsoil on the surfaces to be sown/planted.
Topsoil results from earthworks carried out in neighboring communities/sites, to keep transport and hence cost as low as possible. The topsoil is transported by private contractors and spread on the reshaped wastes of the mine with a bulldozer of the Department of Forests.
Planting, broadcast sowing and hydroseeding in the mine will take place in October, November and early December.
